The Blacksmith – Dev Blog #4

You can play the first prototype of “The Blacksmith”!

Play first prototype! Of course – it is in version v0.1 v0.11 and it is a pure functional prototype where I test the foundation of this game: smithing, selling goods and buying resources. But yeah,  while developing this prototype, I’ve developed a few new concepts for this game in my mind 😉

For the quick ones – here is the link: The Blacksmith – Prototype v0.11 and do not forget to send me your feedback!

Edit 1: It is not mobile optimized. Better play it on tablet or desktop/laptop!

What is this prototype about?

Well, actually it is a digital version of the pen & paper prototype I played with my wife. You, the blacksmith, can create items like swords, shields or tools. Customers can enter your shop and buy things you’ve created. And when you run out of resources, you can buy them at the market.

I guess everything is kinda self explanatory, but I’ll add some tool-tips for a better understanding soon. Please look at the bottom of this page to find all the things on my to-do list!

If you run out of money, you’ll lose this game. But try to reach 250G or even 1,000G and I feel as a winner. In later iterations I’ll add more things that will make this game fun, but I guess first I’ve to work thru the basics to have a solid foundation for this game.

I would suggest that you start with creating a horseshoe and tools, then try something larger and sell your goods to your customers. Keep an eye on your storage, if it runs low, visit the market in your village and buy some coal and iron.

But you can not carry THAT much stuff – you are a blacksmith, not a giant! I think this nice progress bar will help you to see how much capacity you have left on your cart.

As soon as your are in your shop again, craft more items and sell them to your customers. There won’t be only maids – you will see couriers and knights as well and they really want other things than boilers! 😉

And remember, do not run out of money or this game is over!

For the guys with programming skills:

Yeah, I know I know – this Javascript code is quite chaotic and I wrote it just straight forward – it is a prototype and I didn’t care about all the good advantages of good quality code 😉

A friend of mine already mentioned I should have used at least Angular 2 for it – but hell yeah – maybe the game for mobile will become a cordova app … and then he should build it!

What is on the road map for this prototype?

Feel free to send me your wishes or ideas after you play first prototype and I’ll think about it to put them on this list.

  • more tool-tips (hover your mouse over something to learn more about it)
  • progress bar for crafting done!
  • more items to craft, to buy from merchant
  • different customers
  • implement a flying vendor that buys your items as well, removed, not needed yet
  • upgrade your cart
  • upgrade your storage
  • invent new receipts
  • increase your skills
  • reputation system

More is coming – but actually I’m overtired 😉

Man, I thought about much more that I want to post tonight – but I can not think straight right now – so please, come back after xmas and you’ll find more information! And remember: play first prototype!

Do not forget to play first prototype and send me your feedback: The Blacksmith – Prototype v0.11
